Erotic wood carvings in Nepali Temple...


The Pashupatinath Temple, in Bhaktapur, features erotic wood carvings engraved throughout the support beams, also known as “tunala”. Erotic artwork is a common theme across many temples in the Kathmandu valley. Bhaktapur, Nepal. Kathmandu is also known as the city of temples. Bhakatapur Durbar Square protects hundreds of different Hindu temples specially of pagoda models. Bhaktapur is filled with monuments, most terra-cotta with carved wood columns, palaces and temples with elaborate carvings, gilded roofs, open courtyards. The city is dotted with pagodas and religious shrines. It was the ancient Kingdom of Malla Kings .
There are many myths on the status of such erotic arts on Nepali Temples. One of them is –‘According to the Hindu Myth, goddesses of lightening is very shy virgin, who would not strike upon temple with such erotic carving”. It looked like one of the way to protect the Holy temple from natural Disaster.
